“I’m 21 years old; I started driving truck when I was 17. This truck has 18 gears and it was hard in the beginning, but now it’s no big deal. I haul 33 ton each load. The beginning of the summer I clean the sheds, then wheat harvest starts and I am back in the truck. I have about two weeks off between wheat harvest and potato harvest. My Dad is in charge of the sheds and that’s why I work the harvest. I will take over his job when it’s time. I love harvest time, it’s very fast paced. Everybody is go, go, go. One accident I remember was when we hired a guy from another colony a couple of years ago and he turned over a truck. He fell asleep and his trailer went into the ditch and it pulled the truck over.

Just in case you want to know…we meet girls from other colonies at weddings or other gatherings. In the winter time some of the guys go on a vacation and tour other colonies to meet girls. We have the choice to meet a girl, fall in love and ask her parents for permission to marry her. There is a two year dating period before we can ask her parents. Hopefully in two years you know each other. We can date at age 18 but it is preferred that you are more responsible and in your twenties. I’m just right at 21 and I do have a girlfriend in Canada.”
